UN representative meets FNCCI President Dhakal, discusses cooperation in SDGs implementation

KATHMANDU: United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nepal, Hanaa Singer-Hamdy, held a formal meeting with Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) President Chandra Prasad Dhakal at the FNCCI Secretariat, on Thursday. In the meeting, a discussion was held between the two organisations on the implementation of sustainable development goals (SDGs) and collaboration for minimising the impacts of Nepal's graduation from LDCs status. The heads of the two organisations also discussed the capacity development of small and medium enterprises, production of skilled manpower, cooperation with private sector and the three tiers of the government. On the occasion, FNCCI President Dhakal said that the FNCCI can be an important partner in achieving the SDGs as the federation has a strong network across the country and a structure that can reach the grassroots level. President Dhakal briefed about the five major priorities put forward by the new leadership of the federation, setting a strategy for solving the economic crisis, creating an investment environment, strengthening the partnership between the state and the private sector, producing skilled manpower and creating jobs, and respecting businessperson. On the occasion, Hanaa Singer-Hamdy said that she has seriously taken the issues raised by the FNCCI. UN Resident Coordinator Hanaa said that SDGs and upgrading from LDcs are a matter of special interest. She opined that the role of FNCCI will be effective in reducing the negative effects while upgrading to achieve the goals. She said the government, private sector and the United Nations could cooperate while preparing a strategy to facilitate the upgradation. On the occasion, FNCCI Director General Gokarnaraj Awasthi briefed about the efforts made by the federation in SDGs and in economic upgrading.
