US special envoy for human rights, Tibetan issues in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: US Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, and Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues, Uzra Zeya, is in Nepal. She arrived in Kathmandu on Friday on a three-day visit. Officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the US Embassy in Nepal received Zeya at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. The Ministry has informed that the visiting US Under Secretary will hold special meetings with Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba among others during her stay in Nepal. The US Under Secretary met with USAID Deputy Assistant Administrator Anjali Kaur to discuss the strong partnership between the US and Nepal in advancing democracy and human rights for all. She also met with Musakan Khatun and International Women of Courage awardee Bhumika Shrestha. "Through her hard work and bravery, Shrestha has helped lead the way forward and the movement for LGBTQI+ rights in Nepal," Zeya shared on Twitter. Earlier, she visited India on Tuesday. Her visit to India focused on collaboration on human rights, democratic governance and advancing humanitarian priorities. The US State Department, in a press statement, said Zeya will also discuss partnering with India and Nepal during this 'Year of Action for the Summit for Democracy'. The delegation will include United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Deputy Assistant Administrator for Asia Anjali Kaur. Zeya was appointed as the special coordinator for Tibetan Issues in December last year. The International Campaign for Tibet welcomed her appointment as the US new special coordinator for Tibetan Issues and expressed hope that she would work proactively at promoting dialogue between the Dalai Lama's envoys and the Chinese leadership.
