"There is no place for mediocrity,” he says, and on an afterthought adds, "Even if you are to be mediocre, be perfectly mediocre.” The fourth generation businessman of Chaudhary Group also knows that you cannot achieve perfection in everything, and that is why you need to choose what business you want to be a part of and give your best to it.

Business is business when you connect with it

In a career spanning 35 years, Arun Chaudhary tried his luck with more than a hundred ventures, but he could not connect with most of them. Some businesses he closed down on the very verge of success simply because of this disconnect. It became a journey of fortitude and contemplation. But he stayed true to himself and despite the odds ventured and waited to know where he really belonged. Today, Arun Chaudhary is recognised figure in the four arenas of business that he does: automobile, real estate, education and hospitality. The automobile business gave Arun Chaudhary the recognition and the connect he was seeking in business. He was fascinated by cars from a young age, and the Chaudhary‘s had recently acquired the dealership for Suzuki and it presented Arun Chaudhary with the right opportunity to make his entry into the family business. The platform honed his business acumen, and as soon as Maruti Suzuki started manufacturing in India, he secured its dealership and this became his first independent business venture and the flagship business of CG Holdings. Being part of the landscape of the evolution of the automobile industry, Chaudhary reminisces about the initial days when he sold 46 cars as taxis. "One would had to wait for six months minimum to buy a car,” he recalls, "There were no physical showrooms and you had to place your order looking at a catalogue. We used to forward the order to the Maruti company which would then begin production and ship it to Nepal. It was a long and arduous process.” From that sale of 46 units of cars, today his company has succeeded. Arun-Chaudhary-1 At the very beginning of his entrepreneurial journey, he did not take into consideration that business was an art; he was driven by profit. In his words, he was a ‘businessman by default‘. But time and experience taught him that real satisfaction is derived not by mere success but by doing things with real passion and pride. CG Motocorp is a market leader since his arrival into the automobile trade in Nepal.

Progress & Perfection

To have and to hold the largest market share requires immense effort and commitment to business. What was the driving force behind this success? "Somehow I am always driven by the need to be the best and the biggest in what I do,” says Chaudhary, adding, "A half complete mission or achievement leaves me restless. I aim high. I may not always reach my goal but it is not because of want of trying. Winning has become a habit and I do it not to prove anything to anybody, but for myself. I want to be at my highest potential at all times”. He elaborates, "I have failed many times. However, I have taken each of my failures as a process of learning. I ensure I never repeat the same mistake twice,” says Arun Chaudhary. Arun-Chaudhary-2 The field of education is a priority for him. He feels that a sound education can create young and vibrant individuals who can achieve incredible things for themselves and Nepal in the days to come. Arun Chaudhary has the privilege of translating this vision through the educational ventures he is engaged in. Real Estate again is a passion. "When designing homes, I virtually walk through the blueprint and feel how the people living in that home might feel,” he shares, "There are people who build homes just for the sake of building them, but I build homes keeping in mind that if I have to live in them would I love it or not.” This has become the philosophy dominant in the way Arun Chaudhary does business. He refuses to be a part of something he does not feel good about. Giving a different dimension to CG Holdings, Arun Chaudhary has recently expanded his investment in the hospitality sector. He recently acquired Tigerland Safari Resort and Lodge in Chitwan  and has also announced plans to invest Rs five billion in the sector within five years establishing four more hotels and resorts.

A new journey awaits

Arun Chaudhary is on a new quest. He has already handed over the automotive division to his elder son, Karan who has been successfully continuing his father‘s legacy bringing new dynamics into the trade. His younger son Suryansha is getting ready to enter business. Meanwhile, Arun Chaudhary wants to give wings to young entrepreneur dreams by establishing a venture capital fund. He wants to promote entrepreneurship among the youth and in turn help foster Nepal‘s economic growth. He says, "Everybody says one should dream. Today‘s youth have infinite dreams. Dreams alone do not suffice, unless they come true. Nobody so far has been able to help desperate-to-become entrepreneurs realise their dreams. I want to be a part of some of these dreams. I want to use my vision and expertise in mentoring and furthering innovative business ideas.” Arun is excited with the new ideas being germinated in the business world, especially in the entrepreneurial ecosystem of Nepal. "Business is all about ideas. Unlike in our time, the modern business world is bombarded with ideas, the only thing we need to do is translate these ideas into real business which is the only aim of my venture capital fund.” Arun Chaudhary considers his ability to make people happy a high achievement in his life. "I enjoy the smiles on the faces of people around me. Here he talks about his journey and what it means to be taking your father‘s vision forward yet creating your own imprint. Karan-Chaudhary

What brought you into business?

Whenever I think of business, the hard work and tough times faced by my grand-father and father comes to my mind. I believe I have not had to tread such rough terrain. Yet, I think, I am capable of adding value to the business and that was what pushed me to enter business. I also thought if there is something through which I can earn and contribute to my family, my country and to the world, it can happen only through the business.

How will you carry this legacy forward?

I am here to diversify the legacy. I am of course carrying the legacy. I want to do more in business. If my grandfather had one percent and my father did 100 percent, I want to do 1000 percent.

How free are you to experiment with the existing model of business?

I look at it in two ways. Freedom of authority and freedom of time. Freedom of time is not there at all because I am not provided with additional unnecessary time for doing anything while freedom of authority is fully there. After I joined the business, I have succeeded in initiating lots of changes both internal and external into how we do business, how we think and in what environment we function. With all these changes, I feel really proud to say that we are among the top ten dealers of Suzuki across the world.

Can you highlight an achievement?

About six or seven years back, we used to sell about 100-150 units of cars a month, but now we are close to about 600 units a month on average.

Is it hard to work with your father?

Literally, I sweat while facing him. It‘s not that I sweat because I made a mistake or that he will yell if I do, but it‘s just his towering business personality. I sometimes am overwhelmed thinking how can I grow myself to reach the level he has. I always want to stand far above his expectations.

Are there any conflicts working together?

Of course. A lot. But then there is harmony when we come to the point ‘either you convince me or I will convince you.‘

Why excites you about the automobile sector?

I‘ve grown up fixing cars. I understand mechanics. More than automobiles itself, it is production and manpower that really excite me. I would like – in the future - to have a manufacturing plant. Maybe in collaboration with Suzuki. I am also someone who is not stuck to his desk, I like to go around the work stations of staff and colleagues learning, sharing and discussing .

Does failure scare you?

No, not at all. Failure is something that polishes you and takes you a step forward. I am not a person who would fail and regret it.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
