Employers’ Council Chair Sanghai urges ILO to take initiatives for labour market stability

KATHMANDU: Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) Vice President and Chairperson of the Employers’ Council Ram Chandra Sanghai has said Nepal is facing the effects of the global recession after the Covid-19 pandemic. Addressing a plenary session of the 17th Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting of International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Singapore on December 7, Shanghai said the economic indicators showed that Nepal's economy was facing continuous challenges after the pandemic. President of Singapore inaugurated the meeting which saw the participation of representatives of governments, employers and trade unions from the Asia Pacific region and Arabian countries. During the meeting,  Employers’ Council Chairperson Shanghai also said that there have been many changes since the 16th meeting of the Asia-Pacific region held in Bali, Indonesia in 2016, especially, the pandemic and its effect have created challenges and the difficulty in getting quick compensation for the losses caused by it. Despite various difficulties, the private sector of Nepal is working in the fields of business development, job creation, social security, industrialisation, development of small and medium industries and improvement of the working environment. Photo: FNCCI[/caption] He mentioned that the activities of private sector in Nepal are being conducted keeping in mind the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs). "All our activities are aimed at achieving SDGs, and for their implementation, we are collaborating with the government and trade unions through social dialogue," said Chairperson Sanghai. He urged the ILO to come forward with more strategic initiatives and support to facilitate countries to face the challenges in the post-Covid scenario for sustainable development and labour market stability. The meeting was also addressed by Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security, Ek Narayan Aryal, as the representative of the Government of Nepal, and Premal Kumar Khanal, the President of the United Trade Union Coordination Centre. The meeting concluded on December 9.
