KATHMANDU: Rahul Ranjan Sah, an 18-year-old Astronomy enthusiast from Kathmandu, has been awarded the title of 'Wai Wai Glocal Teen Hero Nepal 2022'.
Glocal Teen Hero Award organised by Glocal is the only national platform in Nepal that identifies and honours outstanding teenagers whose creativity, commitment, experience, and strong leadership have helped them achieve success in life.
Announcing the winner, Asish Thakur, Executive Director of Glocal said, “I’m happy to see these winning young minds. These minds prove that they are prepared in all ways to go longer. Their credence proves that they are strong team players and have an immense desire for society”.
Sah was selected among the top six finalists at the competition in the eighth edition of the Glocal Teen Hero Award. Other contestants are Aashish Shah (18), Edu- technologist, Dhanusha; Bimarsha Poudel (18) Film Maker, Chitwan; Darshana Rijal (17), Women Rights Activist, Morang; Nischal Singh Bista (18), Ecopreneur, Achham; Shrijana Gautam (19), Social Activist, Morang.
Sah is an astropreneur, astronomer, and researcher. He is devoted to astronomical research. and associated with the Nepal Astronomical Society, Student Exploration and Development of Space-Nepal. He is also a founder member of Student Development and Exploration in Space - SXC.
Currently, Sah is working as an astropreneur in the project venture “Arohan '' initiating to commercialise and develop Nepal’s 1st private space mission. He has also dedicated himself completely developing resources for students all over Nepal. He is working to change the perception involving, initiating, and sustaining multiple fronts of astronomy from outreach to translations to research with NASA and representing Nepal. He founded the 1st internationally affiliated high school club of Nepal, and the 1st Aviation and Aerospace based organisation venture within SEDS-Nepal and SEDS-US. In addition, Sah represented Nepal among more than 20 countries and showcased Nepali governmental institutions, and excelled in the venture of Space travel where the team worked out the best and cheapest costing around Rs 30,000 compared to Rs 100,000 to launch Sano Satellites. He has devoted his soul to diversifying astronomy for all. In order to access the availability for all, he carried such fragile instruments to the nook and corner of Nepal making the space dream a reality and reaching more than 7,000 students as of now.
Similarly, he worked to eradicate the issue of language hindering in astronomy. His team has committed to translations working on 'Handbook on Astronomical Instrument', a free-readiness. His initiation exists in taking Nepali Astronomy internationally, where he has been aiding and empowering to take Nepali students to compete in international astronomy. He has also contributed to unprivileged and poor government school students to dream big without any issues. The impact has been acting as a bridge for unprivileged students of rural Nepal, India, and the Bhutanese Diaspora prominently to pursue their dream in Heaven's pivoting change for more than 4,000 students promoting our culture and identity as well.
These teenagers were selected from a pool of 648 applications from across the nation, a jury panel through an intense selection round for the impacts they have created in society. The applicants had demonstrated their skills and expertise, and made an impact in their society, in areas like education, social activism, entrepreneurship, technology, innovation, and health. This award recognises and acknowledges the outstanding teen who has made a lasting contribution to society via innovative problem-solving.
The top six finalists were shortlisted for the final round of Wai Wai Glocal Teen Hero Nepal based on their achievements, initiations and contributions, and the impact of work. Glocal’s 20 under 20 and the finalists also attended the series of 'Self-Competency Workshops' on different topics and got an opportunity to interact with Industry’s top leaders and corporate personalities to widen their knowledge.
The finalists were individually interviewed by the panel of judges comprising Adarsh Avasthi, Country Director of the Coca-Cola Company for Nepal; Nona Deprez, the Ambassador of Delegation of the European Union to Nepal; Saurabh Jyoti, Director of Jyoti Group of Companies; Shekhar Golchha, Chairman of Golchha Group and Vidushi Rana, Director of Marketing, Branding and Business Development at Gold Star shoes.
Sah was officially declared and awarded as Wai Wai Glocal Teen Hero Nepal 2022 during the award ceremony at The Soaltee Kathmandu, on Thursday.
