UNDP Assistant Secretary-General Wignaraja lauds NTB’s cooperation

KATHMANDU: Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has held discussions and interactions with Assistant Secretary-General and Director of the Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Kanni Wignaraja, about the programmes undertaken by the NTB under UNDP. Speaking at a programme organised at NTB on Wednesday, Wignaraja said the UNDP has a long-standing cooperation with the NTB and appreciated its cooperation with UNDP and the work done by the board. She said tourism is an important sector of economic development and expressed confidence that the work done by NTB for tourism workers such as job creation and expansion of tourist destinations will help in the promotion of tourism. He informed that NTB has focused on economic development and job creation while promoting sustainable tourism. Likewise, NTB CEO Dhananjay Regmi said UNDP has been contributing to the institutional development of tourism in Nepal for a long time and hoped for continued support from the United Nations organisation. He informed that the Sustainable Tourism for Livelihood Recovery Project (STLRP), a recent tourism development programme run with the support of UNDP, has helped in the creation of short-term employment and development of tourist destinations by minimising the impact on the tourism sector. Similarly, NTB director Mani Raj Lamichhane said that the board has been able to provide short-term employment to around 6,000 people through the STLRP programme.
UNDP Assistant Secretary-General inspects foot and bicycle trails constructed in Chandragiri Meanwhile, UNDP Assistant Secretary-General Kanni Wignaraja, UNDP Resident Representative for Nepal Ayshanie Medagangoda-Labé, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative for Nepal Bernardo Coco inspected the foot trail and bicycle trail constructed in Chandragiri, Kathmandu under the STLRP project. [gallery columns="1" size="full" ids="24800,24799"] Mayor of Chandragiri Municipality Ghanshyam Giri welcomed the UNDP team at the event. He said, “Additional work done by the STLRP project through the NTB has developed a new tourism product in the region as Chandragiri is an important tourist destination.” On the occasion, UNDP Assistant Secretary-General praised the work done by the municipality in sustainable tourism development. On the occasion, NTB CEO Regmi, NTB Director Lamichhane, Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA) secretary Yuvika Bhandari, Chandragiri Riders Club chairman Bishnu Bhakta Maharjan, cyclist Sunita Bhandari and others shared their views and experiences on the trail constructed under STLRP project.
