KATHMANDU: BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) is set to install 30 beds to expand its intensive care unit (ICU).

Around 4,000 patients from Province 1, 2 and Indian nationals from across the border have been visiting BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) on daily basis, BPKIHS said in a press statement issued on Wednesday.

Likewise, the health institution has been witnessing the influx of seriously ill patients who have to be admitted to the ICU. Moreover, most of the incoming patients referred by other hospitals have to be admitted to the ICU. In such conditions, the hospital with limited ICU capacity is unable to provide services to all the patients. Sometimes, incoming patients have to be referred to other health institutions due to lack of beds in the ICU. To address such problems, the BPKIHS has undertaken an initiative to expand the ICU, the hospital said.

BPKIHS said 30-bed ICU will be installed with assistance from the government. The institution has also refuted the media report that accused the hospital of procuring medical equipment illegally. BPKIHS asserted that procurement of medical equipment and beds were being carried out abiding by the law and adhering to the decision and order of the Supreme Court.
